In this conversation, the researcher, Daniel Cavanagh of Bermuda College, will discuss the impact of student mental health issues on educators. We will begin by exploring the size of the problem and how this affects educational outcomes such as attendance, engagement and academic performance. We will then reflect on how this influences the nature of teaching and what changes to the roles of teachers and schools must occur to respond to this challenge. We will also explore the systematic and societal changes that need to occur to support the broader educational community in the efforts to meet the socio-emotional needs of our young people - these include new policies, destigmatising mental illness and taking a preventative approach to mental health.
